Save our Seas! (S.O.S.)
The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) is an annual premiere student competition held in Boston, MA showcasing biosynthetic projects from more than 300 teams around the world. The iGEM competition encourages student researchers to work in teams throughout the summer to attempt to solve real-world challenges by building genetically engineered biological systems. Earning a bronze medal in 2015 and a silver medal in 2016, we are entering the competition in 2017 with a new project in Coral Remediation, aiming to bring home the gold medal! Coral and algae depend on each other to survive, but if stressed, algae leaves the coral, leaving the coral bleached and susceptible to disease and death. One quarter of all ocean species depend on coral reefs for food and shelter. People depend on coral reefs for food, protection of shorelines and even medicines. Your support will help cover conference fees and travel expenses. Help send our team of eight student researchers to the Giant Jamboree iGEM competition in Boston, MA this November to present our research to the world, which aims to help Save Our Seas!
